It tells the Utopian fantasy of a carefree life of “wild and free” lovers. Opener "Nothing Here But Love" is an upbeat, simple song that is led by light percussion and Lenka’s crystal-clear voice. Lenka saved the album from being dreary by delivering soft and delicate vocals, while exploring the sounds of indie, experimental electric with deep ambience. However, there are times that the songs are quite indistinguishable, blending into one long lullaby. Lenka sings about the sensitive and intricate topics of love, loss, motherhood and nostalgia. To set a whimsical mood, the album is full of echoey sounds of the glockenspiel and vibraphone, string instruments like the cello and violin, as well as an assortment of bells. The songstress described the set as “lullabies for adult” that were “made to sooth,” adding that she purposefully “keeps it mellow and not let it get too dynamic” so “everything stays in a comforting, cuddling zone.” This time, she lets go of her usual bright and playful self, and replaces it with some ultra soft and mellow pop/folk. Instead, the record gives a relaxing, calming ambience that helps you drift off to the wonderland of dreams.Īfter her boppy-poppy self-titled debut ‘Lenka’ and the follow-up sweet, romantic ‘Two,’ Lenka is known for making catchy, upbeat pop songs like “The Show” (popularized by the movie ‘Moneyball’) and “Everything At Once” (the theme song of a new Microsoft commercial). Australian indie pop singer-songwriter Lenka’s third album ‘Shadows’ is here to put you to sleep, but not in a bored-to-sleep way.
